Why choose brick or stone
A brick or stone exterior is timeless and refined. Both materials are fire resistant, add curb appeal and value to your home, and are very durable. They stand up to high winds and are rarely damaged by hail or blown debris, and a well-built brick or stone wall can protect a home for generations. Manufactured stone gives a similar look at a lower cost and weight, and it's often combined with siding for an accent that ties the exterior together.
Stucco done right in Minnesota
Stucco is durable and has been used on Minnesota homes for generations, but it depends entirely on what's behind it. Water that gets behind stucco, around windows, at roof lines or at the bottom of walls, has to be able to drain out. When it can't, it can rot the sheathing and framing while the surface still looks fine. That's why we pay close attention to flashing, weather barriers and drainage details at every stucco repair or installation. If you see cracks, staining below windows or soft spots, have it checked.
Repairs and tuckpointing
Even brick and stone need a little care. Mortar joints wear over decades of freeze-thaw cycles, and water that gets into cracks can freeze, expand and loosen brick. Tuckpointing replaces worn mortar to keep water out. Chimneys take the worst weather of any part of the house, so cracked crowns, loose bricks and failed flashing are common. Catching these early is much less expensive than rebuilding. Damaged masonry after a storm? See storm damage restoration.
Our process
- Visit and assessment. We look at the area, check for moisture issues and discuss materials and style.
- Estimate. You get a written estimate with material options.
- Preparation. We remove damaged material and install proper flashing, weather barrier and lath where needed.
- Installation. Masonry and stucco work needs suitable temperatures, so we schedule around the weather and protect fresh work as it cures.
- Clean-up and walkthrough. We clean the site and review the finished work with you.
Choosing between stucco, brick and stone
Each material has its own look and its own strengths. Brick gives a classic, uniform look and is extremely durable. Natural stone is the most rugged and distinctive, with no two pieces alike. Manufactured stone captures much of that look at a lower weight and cost, which makes it popular for accents. Stucco offers a smooth or textured finish that suits many architectural styles. Many homes combine materials, such as a stone base with siding above or brick on the front elevation only. We'll help you see how different combinations would look on your home.

Frequently asked questions
Can masonry or stucco work be done in winter?
Mortar and stucco need temperatures above freezing to cure properly. Some work can be done in cold weather with heated enclosures, but most masonry is scheduled from spring through fall.
How do I know if my stucco has water damage?
Warning signs include cracks, stains or streaks below windows, bulging or soft areas, and peeling paint or musty smells inside. We can inspect and recommend repairs.
What is tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing is removing worn or cracked mortar from between bricks or stones and replacing it with new mortar. It keeps water out and extends the life of the wall.
Is manufactured stone as good as real stone?
Manufactured stone looks very similar, weighs less and costs less to install. Real stone is heavier and costs more, but it's extremely durable. Both need proper flashing and drainage behind them.
Do you work on commercial buildings?
Yes. We do masonry and stucco work on homes, and on commercial buildings we manage masonry and stucco projects performed by trusted subcontractors.
