Bischel Building rebuilds homes after water damage, fire and smoke damage and mold in Farmington, Lakeville and the south metro. We don't do water extraction or drying ourselves. When a home needs drying out or smoke cleanup, we bring in a mitigation company, or work with yours if you already have one, and then our team handles mold remediation and the repairs.
That means one contractor manages the job from the first call to the final walkthrough, instead of you finding a drying company, a drywall crew, a flooring installer and a cabinet maker on your own.
Water damage we rebuild after
We rebuild after every type of water loss, from clean-water leaks to sewer backups. Most interior water damage in Minnesota homes comes from a handful of sources:
- Frozen or burst pipes, usually in outside walls, crawl spaces and unheated rooms during a cold snap
- Ice dam leaks that run inside walls and ceilings in late winter
- Leaking or failed appliances, such as water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerator lines
- Roof and window leaks, including leaks after wind and hail damage
- Sewer and floor-drain backups
When the cause is a broken or backed-up sewer or water line on your side of the property line, we can also handle the excavation and plumbing repairs to fix it, so the same problem doesn't come back after the rebuild. Lines on the city's side are the city's responsibility.
How a water loss works with us
- Stop the water. Shut off the main water valve or the appliance supply if you can do it safely, and turn off power to wet areas. Take photos before anything is moved.
- Call us. We'll bring in a water mitigation company to extract standing water and dry the structure, or work with your mitigation company if you already have one. Drying is their work, not ours, and we coordinate with them so the rebuild can start as soon as the home is dry.
- Inspection and estimate. We inspect what the water reached, photograph the damage and give you a written, itemized estimate for the repairs.
- Mold remediation, if needed. If wet materials have grown mold, we remove and remediate the affected areas before anything is closed back up.
- Rebuild. Our team replaces what was damaged and matches it to the rest of your home as closely as we can.
What we repair and rebuild
- Drywall, ceilings, texture and paint
- Insulation in walls, ceilings and attics
- Flooring: luxury vinyl plank, hardwood, tile, laminate and subfloor
- Kitchen, bathroom and vanity cabinets; see cabinetry and finish carpentry
- Trim, baseboard, doors and casing
- Full rooms when the damage is extensive, including finished basements, kitchens and bathrooms
Some homeowners use a rebuild as a chance to change a layout or upgrade finishes. We'll price the repair and any upgrades separately, so you can see exactly what is repair and what is your choice.
Fire and smoke damage repairs
After a fire, the first step is securing the home. We offer emergency board-up to cover broken windows and doors and keep weather out. Once the fire department releases the home, we inspect the damage, document it with photos and give you an itemized estimate for the repairs, from framing and roofing to drywall, insulation, flooring, cabinets and trim.
Soot and smoke cleanup comes before the rebuild. That work is typically handled by a mitigation company we bring in, or we work with your mitigation company if you already have one. Once the cleanup is done, our team rebuilds what the fire damaged.
Mold remediation
Mold grows quickly on wet drywall, insulation and wood, often behind walls and under flooring where you can't see it. We remediate mold by removing the affected materials and fixing the moisture problem that caused it, whether that's a slow plumbing leak, an ice dam or poor attic ventilation. Then we rebuild the area. If you notice a musty smell, stains that keep coming back or peeling paint near a leak, call us for an inspection.
If insurance is paying for the repairs
Sudden water losses and fires are often paid for through a homeowner's insurance claim. Whether a loss is covered depends on your policy, so that question goes to your insurer or agent. We inspect and document the damage, give you an itemized estimate you can share, and meet your adjuster on site if you'd like. See our insurance restoration process page for each step and your rights as a Minnesota homeowner.

Frequently asked questions
Do you do water extraction and drying?
No. We bring in a water mitigation company to extract water and dry your home, or work with yours if you already have one, and we coordinate with them. Once the structure is dry, our team handles mold remediation if it's needed and the rebuild.
Do you do mold remediation?
Yes. We remove mold-damaged materials, fix the moisture source that caused the mold, and rebuild the area.
Do you repair fire and smoke damage?
Yes. We offer emergency board-up after a fire. Soot and smoke cleanup is typically handled by a mitigation company we bring in, or yours if you already have one, and then we repair the damage, from framing and roofing to drywall, insulation, flooring, cabinets and trim.
Do you rebuild after a sewer backup?
Yes. We rebuild after all types of water loss, including sewer and floor-drain backups. If the cause is a problem with the sewer or water line on your side of the property, we can also handle the excavation and plumbing repairs.
Can you fix ice dam damage inside my home?
Yes. We repair the drywall, paint, insulation and flooring that ice dam leaks damage, and we look at attic ventilation and insulation so the same problem is less likely to come back next winter. For the roof itself, see roof repair. Our guide to ice dams in Minnesota explains the causes.
Will my insurance cover water damage?
Only your insurance company can answer that, because coverage depends on your policy and the cause of the water. We can document the damage and give you an itemized repair estimate to share with your insurer.
Will you meet my insurance adjuster?
Yes. When an adjuster comes out to look at a water or fire loss, we can be there to walk them through the damage behind walls and under floors and go over our rebuild estimate. Your claim stays between you and your insurer.
