We guide you from choosing a lot and planning the design to the final walkthrough, and our family-owned team manages every step so your home is built the way you pictured it.

Building homes is how Bischel Building started. Right after college, Mike Bischel helped his dad build the family home in Farmington and built his first house soon after.

What fully custom means to us

A custom home isn't picked from a catalog. We start with how you live: how many bedrooms you need, where the mudroom goes so winter boots stay out of the kitchen, whether you want a main-floor primary suite, a walkout basement or a big shop garage. Then we work with an architect or designer to create a plan around your lot, your budget and your style. Every customer gets a custom plan, never a stock floor plan.

Our custom home process

  1. First conversation. We talk about your goals, timeline and budget, and whether you already have a lot.
  2. Lot evaluation. If you're looking at land in places like Credit River, Elko New Market or rural Dakota County, we can help you look at access, soils, utilities or well and septic, and setbacks before you buy.
  3. Design. We work with outside architects and designers to develop the floor plan, elevations and selections with you.
  4. Estimate and contract. A detailed written estimate and a clear contract.
  5. Permits. We handle building permits and coordinate with your city or township.
  6. Construction. Site work, foundation, framing, roofing, exterior, mechanicals, insulation and interior finishes, with regular updates and walkthroughs along the way.
  7. Final walkthrough and move-in. We go over every detail with you and make sure everything works the way it should.

Built for Minnesota winters

A home here has to handle 90-degree summers and below-zero winters. We pay close attention to the parts you don't see: a well-insulated and air-sealed building envelope, good attic ventilation and roof details that help prevent ice dams, proper drainage away from the foundation, and windows and doors chosen for real Minnesota weather. These details make a home more comfortable and cheaper to heat, and they protect your investment.

Finishes and options

You'll make the choices that make the house yours, and we'll help you weigh them: kitchen layouts and cabinetry, tile and flooring, custom trim and built-ins, exterior siding and stone or brick, decks and outdoor living spaces. If you're planning to stay for the long run, ask about aging-in-place features like zero-step entries and wider doorways that are easy to include from the start.

Clear communication from start to finish

Building a home involves hundreds of decisions. We help you make them in a sensible order and on a schedule that keeps the project moving, so you're not choosing cabinet hardware the week the framers need window sizes. You'll know who to call with questions, what's happening on site, and what's coming next. Any changes are written down with their cost and schedule impact before the work is done, so there are no surprises at the end.

Why build with Bischel Building

We're a family-owned builder based at 100 8th St in Farmington, and we're small enough that you work directly with the people building your home. Mike's engineering background shows in careful planning, and we keep learning by attending industry events like the International Builders Show to bring proven new ideas to our customers. Because we also do remodeling, roofing, siding and restoration, we know how homes age and what holds up over time, and we build with that in mind.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to own a lot before we start?

No. We can start talking about your home before you have land, and we're happy to help you evaluate a lot before you buy it.

How long does it take to build a custom home?

It depends on the size and complexity of the home, the time needed for design and permits, and the season you break ground. We'll give you a realistic schedule once the plan is set.

Can you build in winter?

Yes, with planning. Foundations are easiest to pour before the ground freezes, and we use cold-weather practices when needed. Once the house is enclosed, interior work continues all winter.

Can you build on rural land with a well and septic?

Yes. We'll coordinate with your township or county on well, septic and permit requirements.

Can I make changes during construction?

Yes, though changes are easier and cheaper earlier in the process. We document every change in writing, with the cost and schedule impact, before the work is done.
