Built-ins that solve real problems
The best built-ins are planned around how you live. A mudroom bench with hooks and cubbies keeps winter coats, boots and backpacks in one place. Built-in shelves can turn an awkward nook or the space under the stairs into useful storage. A window seat adds seating and storage to a bedroom or finished basement. We'll measure, plan and build pieces that fit your space exactly.
Materials and finishes
We work with paint-grade materials for clean, painted trim and built-ins, and stain-grade hardwoods like oak, maple and cherry where you want the wood grain to show. We'll help you choose trim profiles that suit your home, whether it's a classic craftsman look, simple modern lines or a traditional style that matches an older home. Minnesota's dry winters and humid summers make wood move, so we let materials acclimate, leave room for movement where needed and fasten them properly to reduce gaps and cracks over time.
Our process
- Visit and measure. We look at the space, measure carefully and talk about style and function.
- Plan and estimate. We plan the piece or trim package and give you a written estimate.
- Build and install. We build and install with tight joints, clean lines and careful attention to level and square.
- Finish. We fill, caulk and prepare for paint or stain, and clean up completely.
Carpentry that ties a remodel together
Finish carpentry is often the last step in a bigger project, and it's what people notice first. After a basement is drywalled or a home addition is closed in, trim, doors and built-ins turn bare rooms into finished living space. When we replace windows or doors, new casing and sills give the openings a clean, consistent look. We can also update the trim throughout a home in one project, swapping narrow, dated casing and baseboard for a fuller profile that changes the feel of every room. Painted built-ins and new trim are among the most affordable ways to make an older home feel custom.
Why Bischel Building
Finish carpentry is where shortcuts show. As a family-owned contractor based in Farmington, we take pride in the details: miters that close tight, reveals that are even, and built-ins that look like they came with the house. Because we're a general contractor, your carpentry can be part of a larger project, so the same crew that remodels a room also trims it out. We put together a custom plan for every customer and stand behind our craftsmanship.
Frequently asked questions
Can you match the existing trim in my older home?
Often, yes. We can match many common profiles and, when needed, combine stock moldings to recreate older trim styles. We'll show you how close a match we can get before we start.
Why do gaps appear in trim during winter?
Wood shrinks when indoor air is dry in winter and swells in humid summers. Proper acclimation, fastening and joint techniques reduce seasonal gaps, and running a humidifier in winter also helps.
How long does a built-in take?
It depends on the size and design. A simple shelf unit is quicker than a full wall of cabinets. We'll give you a timeline with your estimate.
Is finish carpentry a winter project?
Yes. It's indoor work, so it can be scheduled any time of year, and winter is often a good time to get on our calendar.
