- Flat and low-slope roofs, including modified bitumen (torch-down)

Roofing brands we install include CertainTeed, GAF, Owens Corning and DaVinci. We'll explain the pros and cons of each option for your home and budget, including how each one handles Minnesota hail, wind and snow. What customers say
“They did a great job with our roof. I’ve even called when we had water coming in and they’ve been gracious to promptly drop off fans and help rip up carpet to avoid further issues. Always helpful and highly recommend!”Tara F.
“Excellent company. We recently had gutters put up on our house and couldn’t be happier with the results. Will be using them for more future projects!”Matthew J.
Our roof replacement process
- Inspection. We look at the shingles, flashing, vents, gutters and, where we can, the attic, and take photos so you can see what we see.
- Written estimate. An itemized estimate that covers materials, ventilation, flashing and any decking repairs.
- Permit and scheduling. Most Minnesota cities require a re-roofing permit, and we handle it. Then we schedule around the weather.
- Tear-off and protection. We protect your landscaping, siding and driveway, remove the old roof and repair the deck.
- Installation. Ice and water barrier at the eaves and valleys, underlayment, new flashing, ventilation and shingles or other roofing.
- Clean-up and final walkthrough. We clean up nails and debris and walk the finished job with you.
Built for Minnesota winters
Ice dams are one of the most common roof problems we see. Heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof, the water refreezes at the cold eaves, and it backs up under the shingles into your ceilings and walls. A new roof alone doesn't fix that. We look at attic ventilation and air leaks, install ice and water protection at the eaves as Minnesota's building code requires, and make sure gutters drain properly. That combination protects your home long after the snow melts.
When it's time for a new roof
When a roof is near the end of its life, has widespread hail damage, or has leaked in several places, replacement is usually the better value. If the problem is limited to one area, a repair may be enough; see repair or replace? on our roof repair page. We'll give you an honest recommendation either way. If damage came from a storm, you may want to talk with your insurance company. We can provide photos and an itemized estimate, and we explain how that works on our insurance restoration page.
Why choose Bischel Building for your roof
We're a family-owned general contractor based at 100 8th St in Farmington and accredited by the BBB. Because we also do siding, windows and interior repairs, one team can handle the whole job when a roof problem affects more than the roof. And when water is coming in, we respond, as Tara found out.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Minnesota?
Most cities, including Farmington, Lakeville and Apple Valley, require a permit for re-roofing. We pull permits when required and schedule the inspections.
Can you replace a roof in winter?
It depends on the temperature and the materials, since shingles need warmth to seal properly. Emergency repairs can be done year-round, and we'll protect your home until a full replacement can be done in suitable weather.
How do I know if I need a new roof?
Warning signs include curling or missing shingles, lots of granules in your gutters, daylight in the attic, repeated leaks and widespread hail damage. A free inspection is the easiest way to know for sure.
Do you replace flat roofs and metal roofs?
Yes. We replace and repair flat and low-slope roofs, including torch-down modified bitumen, and on metal and aluminum roofs, along with shingle, shake and specialty roofs.
How can I prevent ice dams?
Ice dams are mostly caused by heat escaping into the attic. Better air sealing, insulation and ventilation, plus ice and water protection at the eaves, are the long-term fix. We can look at your attic and roof and recommend what will help.
