Making an addition match your home
A good addition doesn't look added on. We match the rooflines, roofing, siding, windows and trim as closely as possible, and when an exact match isn't available, we'll show you options, such as residing the whole house so everything ties together. Inside, we carry floor heights, trim styles and finishes through so the rooms flow naturally.
Our process
- Visit and feasibility. We look at your lot, your home's structure and your goals, and talk through setbacks and other limits that may affect what can be built.
- Design. We work with outside architects and designers to create a custom plan for the space.
- Detailed estimate. A written estimate that lays out the scope and options.
- Permits. Using the plans from the architect or designer, we pull permits when required and get HOA approval if needed.
- Construction. Foundation, framing, roofing, exterior, mechanicals and interior finishes, with inspections at each stage.
- Tie-in and walkthrough. We open the connection to the existing house as late as possible to keep the mess and the cold out, then walk the finished space with you.
Building through Minnesota seasons
Foundation work is easiest when the ground isn't frozen, so many families plan additions to break ground in spring through fall. That doesn't mean winter is off the table: once the shell is closed in, interior work continues all winter. Planning and permitting can take time, so winter is a great season to plan your addition with your architect or designer and get on the schedule for the next building season.
Addition or remodel?
Sometimes the space you need is already there. Before you build out, it's worth asking whether finishing your basement or remodeling an underused room would do the job. We'll give you an honest opinion on what makes the most sense for your home and budget. Planning an addition so a parent can live with you? Why choose Bischel Building
An addition touches almost every trade, which is exactly what a general contractor is for. Our family-owned team has built new homes as well as remodels, so we understand structure, foundations and how a house fits together. Owner Mike Bischel's background as an engineer shows in the planning, and homeowners tell us we work hard to understand what they want and then make it happen. We also convert garages into bedrooms and build attached in-law suites.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for a home addition?
Yes. Additions require a building permit, plus electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits as needed. Cities like Lakeville, Apple Valley and Northfield also have zoning rules about setbacks and lot coverage, which we check early.
How long does an addition take?
It depends on size and complexity. A porch or small bump-out is quicker than a two-story addition. Design and permitting add time before construction starts. We'll give you a realistic schedule once the plan is set.
Can you build an addition in winter?
Some parts, yes. Foundations are easier before the ground freezes, but framing and interior work can continue through winter once the structure is enclosed. We plan the schedule around Minnesota weather.
Will the addition match my house?
That's our goal. We match roofing, siding, windows and trim as closely as possible and will show you options if an exact match isn't available.
Can I live at home during construction?
In most cases, yes. We keep the existing house closed off from the work area until the final tie-in, and we keep the site clean and safe.
