A well-installed door keeps out winter drafts, improves security and makes your home look great from the street.
We measure carefully, install and seal every door properly, and finish the trim inside and out so it looks like it belongs.
Doors we install
- Front entry doors, with or without sidelights and transoms
- Storm and screen doors that add protection and let in a breeze
- Patio doors, including sliding and hinged doors, to decks and patios
- Overhead garage doors, plus garage entry and service doors
- Interior doors, including passage, closet, pocket and barn-style doors, with trim and casing
- Wider or accessible doorways as part of aging-in-place remodeling
- Storm-damaged door replacement; see storm damage restoration

Choosing the right material
Fiberglass doors resist dents, won't rot or rust, insulate well and can look like real wood, which makes them a great fit for Minnesota weather. Steel doors are strong, secure and budget-friendly, though they can dent. Wood doors are beautiful and classic but need more upkeep, especially on a sunny or exposed entry. For patio doors, we'll help you compare sliding and hinged styles, glass options and frame materials.
Installation is what keeps out the cold
Even the best door leaks air if it's installed poorly. We check that the opening is square and the sill is level and well supported, flash the opening to keep water out, insulate the gap between the frame and the wall, and adjust the weatherstripping so the door closes tight. That's what stops January drafts, frost on the threshold and doors that stick in humid summer weather.
Full replacement or slab only?
If the frame is solid and square, sometimes only the door itself needs replacing. Often, though, a full replacement with a new pre-hung door and frame is the better long-term fix, especially if the sill is soft or the door has always been drafty. We'll look at your door and tell you honestly which makes sense.
Our process
- Visit and measurement. We look at your current doors, measure, and talk about style, security and budget.
- Selection and estimate. We help you choose a door and give you a written estimate.
- Installation. We remove the old door, prepare and flash the opening, and install, insulate and seal the new one, often in a single day per door.
- Finishing. We install trim and hardware, adjust everything for a smooth close, and clean up.
Security and everyday convenience
Your front door is also your first line of security. We install sturdy strike plates with long screws that reach the framing, deadbolts that line up properly, and hardware that locks smoothly instead of needing a shoulder push. If you'd like, we can prepare a door for a smart lock or a video doorbell, and we can add sidelight glass that lets in light while keeping some privacy. On patio doors, good locks and a properly adjusted track make a big difference in both security and ease of use.
Why Bischel Building
We're a family-owned general contractor in Farmington that installs windows, siding and trim too, so we handle the whole opening, not just the door. If your siding or trim around the door is damaged, we can fix it at the same time, and we match finishes so everything looks right together.
Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a door in the winter?
Yes. We prepare everything in advance and work quickly so the opening is exposed as briefly as possible, and we protect your floors from snow and slush.
How long does it take to install a new entry door?
Many single entry doors can be installed in about a day. Doors with sidelights, structural changes or custom sizes can take longer.
Will a new door lower my heating bills?
A well-insulated, properly sealed door reduces drafts and heat loss at that opening and makes nearby rooms more comfortable. Results vary by home.
Do I need a storm door in Minnesota?
Not always. A storm door adds protection for older or wood doors and lets you add a screen for summer. On some newer insulated doors, especially in direct sun, a storm door can trap heat, so we'll help you decide.
Can you make a doorway wider?
Yes. We can widen interior or exterior openings, including the framing changes and trim, for easier access with walkers or wheelchairs or just a more open feel.
