Choosing the right floor for a Minnesota home
Our winters bring snow, salt and slush through the door, and our heating season makes indoor air very dry. That affects which floors work best where. Entries and mudrooms do well with tile or LVP that shrugs off water and salt. In basements, where concrete slabs can be cool and moisture is always a consideration, LVP or tile is usually the safest choice. Solid hardwood is beautiful on main floors, but it expands and contracts with the seasons, so engineered hardwood can be a more stable choice in some rooms. We'll walk you through the pros and cons for each space.
Preparation makes the difference
Most flooring problems start underneath. Before we install, we check the subfloor for flatness, squeaks, soft spots and moisture, and fix what needs fixing. We let wood products acclimate to your home, use the right underlayment and moisture barriers, and follow each manufacturer's installation requirements. Then we finish with clean transitions between rooms and new or reinstalled baseboard and trim.
Our process
- Visit and measure. We measure the rooms, check the existing floor and subfloor, and talk about how you use each space.
- Selection and estimate. We help you choose a floor and give you a detailed written estimate.
- Prep. We move what's needed, remove old flooring, and repair and level the subfloor.
- Installation. We install the new floor, transitions and trim.
- Clean-up and walkthrough. We clean up and review the finished floors and care tips with you.
Living at home while we install
New floors mean moving furniture and, for a short time, not using a room. We'll talk with you ahead of time about what needs to be moved and the order we'll work in, so you can keep using the rest of your home. We contain dust when we remove old flooring, protect finished surfaces nearby, and keep a clear path through the house at the end of each day. If you have pets or small children, let us know and we'll plan around them. For whole-floor projects, we can work room by room to keep your home usable.
Why Bischel Building
Because we're a general contractor, flooring can be part of a bigger project like a kitchen or bathroom remodel, with the floor installed at the right point in the schedule instead of fitted around finished cabinets. We're family owned and based in Farmington, we show up when we say we will, and we leave your home clean.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best flooring for a basement in Minnesota?
Luxury vinyl plank and tile are usually the best choices because they handle moisture and cooler slabs well. Carpet is another cozy option in dry basements. We'll check for moisture before we recommend anything.
Can you install flooring in winter?
Yes. Flooring is an interior project, so it can be done year-round. We let materials acclimate inside your home first, which matters most during dry winter months.
Do you remove and dispose of old flooring?
Yes. Removing the old floor and preparing the subfloor is part of doing the job right, and we include it in our estimate when needed.
Can LVP go over my existing floor?
Sometimes. If the existing floor is flat, solid and well attached, LVP can go over some surfaces. In other cases, removing it gives a better result. We'll check and explain.
How long does flooring installation take?
Many single rooms take a day or two once materials are on site. Larger areas, tile work and subfloor repairs add time. We'll give you a schedule with your estimate.
