Bischel Building repairs wind and hail damage to roofs, siding, gutters, windows, soffit and fascia for homeowners in Farmington, Lakeville and the south metro. We inspect the whole exterior, document every damaged area with dated photos, write an itemized estimate, meet your insurance adjuster on site if you'd like us there, and then do the repairs.
If a hail storm or high winds just went through your neighborhood, start with a free inspection. Hail damage is often easier to miss than to see, and it is much easier to deal with early.
What hail and wind do to a Minnesota home
Minnesota's hail season usually runs from late spring through summer, and a single fast-moving storm can hit one neighborhood in Apple Valley hard while leaving homes a few miles away untouched. Each part of the exterior takes the hit differently:
- Roofs. Hail bruises and cracks shingles and knocks loose the granules that protect the asphalt from the sun. Straight-line winds lift, crease and tear shingles and peel back flashing and ridge caps.
- Siding. Hail cracks and punctures vinyl and dents metal trim, usually on the side of the house that faced the storm. Wind pulls panels loose or off completely.
- Gutters and downspouts. Hail dents seamless gutters and downspouts, and wind and falling branches bend or pull them away from the fascia.
- Windows. Hail breaks glass, tears screens and dents or cracks window frames, wraps and capping.
- Soffit and fascia. Hail and wind crack vented soffit panels and dent or loosen fascia wraps, which can open a path for water, birds and pests.
Some damage is obvious. A lot of it isn't. A bruised shingle can look fine from the driveway and start leaking a year or two later. That is why a close, hands-on inspection matters.
Signs of hail or wind damage you can check from the ground
- Dents or dings on gutters, downspouts, window wraps and the metal vents on your roof
- Piles of shingle granules at the bottom of downspouts
- Missing, creased or lifted shingles, or shingle pieces in the yard
- Cracked, holed or loose siding, especially on the side that faced the storm
- Broken window glass, torn screens or damaged window frames
- Cracked or missing soffit panels and loose fascia
- Spatter marks on your deck, fence, mailbox or air conditioner fins
Please don't climb onto a wet or damaged roof to look. Take photos from the ground and let us handle the rest.
Our wind and hail inspection
When you call, we set up a time to come out and look at the whole exterior, not just the roof. We check shingles, flashing, vents, gutters, siding, soffit, fascia, windows, doors and decks, and the attic where we can reach it. We take dated photos of everything we find and mark the damaged areas so you can see them too.
Afterward, we walk you through what we saw in plain language and give you a written, itemized estimate for the repairs. If we don't find damage worth repairing, we'll tell you that, too. If you file an insurance claim, we can meet the adjuster at your home to point out the damage we documented and talk through the repair scope.
Think your home took hail or wind damage? Call first and we'll set up a free inspection.
Exterior repairs we handle after wind and hail
Because we are a general contractor, one team can take care of the whole exterior instead of you lining up a roofer, a siding crew and a gutter company separately.
- Roof repair and full roof replacement, including flashing, vents and ventilation. Shingle brands we install include CertainTeed, GAF, Owens Corning and DaVinci.
- Siding repair and replacement. Brands we install include Royal Building Products, CertainTeed, Edco, LP SmartSide and James Hardie.
- Seamless gutters (5" and 6" K-style), downspouts and gutter guards
- Soffit, fascia and attic ventilation
- Window and door repair or replacement, with brands including Marvin, Andersen and Pella
- Deck and fence repairs
If a damaged roof or window let water inside, see our water, fire and mold damage restoration page for the interior side of the job.
Matching materials and code upgrades
When only part of your siding or roofing is damaged, we look for the closest available match and show you the options. Older homes sometimes need updates during repairs to meet current Minnesota building code, such as added ice and water protection on a roof or changes to ventilation. We'll point out anything the building code or your city's permit requires and list it in our estimate, and we pull permits when required.
Protecting your home right after a storm
If hail or wind has opened up your roof or broken a window, the first goal is keeping water out. We offer emergency tarping and board-up: we can tarp a damaged roof or cover a broken window to prevent more damage until repairs are scheduled. If water is coming in, call us at (651) 463-8762. Take photos before anything is moved, and keep receipts for any temporary fixes you pay for. Our after-the-storm checklist walks through what to photograph and keep.

If insurance is paying for the repairs
Many wind and hail repairs are paid for through a homeowner's insurance claim. You file the claim and work directly with your insurer; we handle the construction side and follow Minnesota's rules for contractors on insurance work. For roofing contracts paid by insurance, that includes your right to cancel within 72 hours if your claim is denied. Our insurance restoration process page walks through each step, from the first inspection to the final paperwork.
Why homeowners call Bischel Building after hail and wind
After big hail storms, out-of-town crews often knock on doors across the metro, and some are gone before the first warranty question comes up. We are a family-owned contractor with an office at 100 8th St in Farmington, licensed in Minnesota (License BC634092) and working in the south metro since 2005. We'll still be here after the storm crews leave, and you can stop by the office or call us any time. Owner Mike Bischel and his team inspect your home themselves, explain what they find honestly, and stand behind the work. We install products backed by manufacturer warranties, and the warranty details for your project are spelled out in your written contract.
Frequently asked questions
How soon after a hail storm should I get an inspection?
As soon as you safely can. Early photos make the damage easier to document, and small problems like a lifted shingle are cheaper to fix before they let water in. Most insurance policies also have deadlines for reporting damage, so check your policy or ask your agent.
What does a wind or hail damage inspection cost?
Our inspections and estimates are free. We'll look over your home, photograph any damage and give you a written estimate with no obligation.
Will my insurance cover hail damage?
Only your insurance company can answer that, because coverage depends on your policy. We can show you the damage we found and give you an itemized repair estimate to share with your insurer.
Do you meet with the insurance adjuster?
Yes, if you'd like us to. We meet adjusters on site to point out the damage we documented and discuss the repair scope. You remain in charge of your claim and your conversations with your insurer.
Does hail damage always mean a new roof?
No. Light, scattered damage can often be repaired. Widespread bruising, cracked shingles or lost granules across large areas usually make replacement the better value. We'll show you the photos and give you a straight answer either way.
Can wind and hail repairs be done in winter?
Many can. Siding, windows, gutters and emergency roof repairs can be done most of the year. Full roof replacements depend on temperatures and weather, so we'll talk with you about timing and protect your home in the meantime.
